Barbara was born on December 1, 1935 in Johnston City, the daughter of Charles Wallace and Dama (Hawkins) Wells. She married Ray Lee Richard on July 4, 1950. Her loving husband of fifty-six years preceded her in death on January 31, 1991.

Barbara worked for thirty-five years at Maytag before retiring in 1999.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend.

She is survived by three sons, Mick Richard and wife Pam of Pittsburg, Alan Richard and wife Becky of Carterville, and Kenny Richard and wife Debbie of Johnston City; three daughters, Cathy Thompson of Johnston City, Carol Melcher of Marion, and Tracy Campbell of Marion; fourteen grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and one sister, Jeanette Vaughn of Carterville. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Gary Richard; four brothers; and four sisters.

Aunt Barb was one of the most gifted people I have ever met. I don't say that because she was my Aunt, I say it because I seen how she treated others. She was always kind, she treated others with the highest respect, and was a good Christian Woman.

It's hard to believe out of all those loving family members on my Mom's side, my Mom is the last one left of "Grandma Damie's Kids".

She and her husband, "Uncle Jack" were always fun to be around, and if you went to their house, you knew you were loved, and you never left hungry.

I will never forget the day their beloved Son, Gary was in a fatal motorcycle accident. We all worried about Aunt Barb and Uncle Jack. It was a terrible tragedy they endured. But they pulled through, although I believe they never got over the loss.

I remember Uncle Jack's battle with Diabetes. I remember seeing Jack after he had an amputation. We had one of the best talks I can ever remember having. He reminded me how short life truly was, and constantly told me how much he loved his family. It wasn't long after that, Uncle Jack passed away.

We lost many family members in the 1990's, and just last October, Barb passed out at Aunt Bonnie's funeral. What was odd, my Mom, (her sister) was right across the hall in the same hospital from Aunt Barb. "Stay sweet, Jimmie, stay sweet". I think maybe she had a feeling her time was drawing near.

Barb and my Mom talked every day on the phone, Barb was Mom's "Baby Sister"--she loved her dearly, and is lost without her.

Every time my Mom was hospitalized, I called Barb, and she gave me the best advice on God's Green Earth, I miss her tremendously.

My Mom just talked with Barb the day before Barb passed away. The next thing we knew, Aunt Barb passed away suddenly at home the next morning.

We will always miss Aunt Barb, but we know she's safe in the care of Our Lord.
